PACE provided the electrical and plumbing designs for the new 470,000 SF Central State Hospital behavioral health center located in Petersburg, Virginia.  The new facility will provide a total of 252 in-patient beds, including 111 maximum security and 141 civil beds. The project includes patient treatment/program areas and administrative and support services space.  The design includes infrastructure to support a future 48-bed addition.

The service to the building includes a 5,000A double-ended switchgear with tie breaker. The electrical design includes on site self-paralleling generators to provide backup of critical systems via a 5000A emergency switchboard to serve multiple automatic transfer switches. Behavioral healthcare grade LED lighting fixtures were utilized within all patient accessible areas.  LED light fixtures are provided throughout the facility. Networked DALI lighting controls are utilized throughout the project.  Patient sleeping area lighting controls utilize low voltage patient accessible controls with master override control from the nurse station.

The plumbing system includes a laundry reclaim system as well as local domestic water heating with recirculation systems within each patient pod.  A centralized water heating system, with recirculation, serves the remainder of the building.

The plumbing design utilizes a centralized hot water distribution system to serve the back of house and administration areas, including kitchen and laundry equipment. The patient care areas are served by individual water heating systems equipped with features for additional monitoring and control specifically to combat Legionella.  Plumbing fixtures within patient care areas shall be anti-ligature type and abuse resistant in accordance with Behavioral Health guidelines and best practices.
