Norfolk State University Greenhouse, Norfolk, Virginia
This new 1,500 sf greenhouse is on the campus of Norfolk State University, just outside of Roy A. Wood Science Building. The new greenhouse is a traditional aluminum and glass house that replaces one that formerly sat on top of the Woods Science Building. The new facility includes new walkways around the greenhouse, so that students can learn from and enjoy the plants as they are making their way through campus. The building is used for the cultivation of blue/green algae, crop plants and microorganisms, hydroponics, and tree seedlings. Students are able to work on a variety of projects, including topics related to food sources and growing plants to beautify campus.
The plumbing design included the design of a domestic cold-water system serving various hose bibbs and emergency eyewash/shower units. Cross connection control was provided to eliminate the possibility of contamination of the water supply from activities in the greenhouse.
The building’s electrical service was designed to be a 100A, 120/208 volt, 3-phase, 4-wire system supplied from the adjacent Woods Science Building. Additionally, a 35 KW natural gas generator was included to offer backup power to the greenhouse in case of a utility power outage. The lighting design featured decorative uplighting on the exterior of the greenhouse, enhancing its visual appeal and highlighting the facility.
