Originally constructed in 1963, Fire Station No. 1 is a two-story, three apparatus bay, 10,200 square foot facility that underwent a “complete” interior and exterior renovation.

The three apparatus bays have new energy efficient, higher lumen LED fixtures to replace the older fluorescent lighting. New turnout gear lockers were installed to replace the older wooden lockers. New infrared gas fired heater units were installed in all bays. The signature components of the apparatus bays are the new, fire engine red steel bi-fold bay doors. These unique doors maintain the operational efficiency of the original bi-fold doors as well as retaining the architectural character of the building.

The interior first-floor was renovated without any major changes to the original layout. Minor but significant changes include the kitchen being increased in size to provide more workspace and a new center work island has been added. There are all new cabinets and countertops, a new commercial grade exhaust hood and range, new refrigerators, flooring, paint finishes and lighting. The kitchen, dining area, and corridors all have new seamless floors. The offices and dispatch area all have new carpet and chair rails, and the restroom has new ceramic tile floors and walls with new sinks and toilets.

The interior second floor, apart from the bunk room, has been completely redesigned. The bunk room retains its original design but with all new wall finishes, ceiling, lighting, carpet and window shades. There are also individual bunk rooms for the Battalion Chiefs. The shower and restroom area have a completely new layout with additional showers, toilet stalls and sinks. There is also a separate shower and restroom for female fire and rescue staff assigned to this facility. There is a new day room, laundry room, and new lockers for each staff of each shift. There is also a new call alerting system throughout the building, new door access controls for security, and an entirely new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system throughout the facility.

The exterior of the building included all the original windows and doors being replaced with more energy-efficient units. All exterior building light fixtures were upgraded to new LED fixtures. The exterior fire stairs were removed and replaced.

The site design included new landscaping and a new concrete apron on Market Street.
